The Historic England Archives

Historic England’s Archive is one of the largest and most significant collections of its kind, holding over 14 million photographs, drawings, plans and records that document England’s historic environment. Accredited by The National Archives, the Archive plays a vital role in supporting research, conservation and public understanding of how places have changed over time.

Through digitisation and partnerships, we are working to make these collections more accessible to wider audiences. Recent projects include work on collections such as the Janette Rosing Collection, helping to catalogue and open up thousands of historic images. By improving access and developing new ways to explore the archive digitally, this work enables more people to connect with England’s heritage while ensuring these irreplaceable records are preserved for future generations.
